Air Quality is an important issue within the Metrolina Region.
As of 2005, MUMPO’s regional air quality status is:
Non-Attainment
A non-attainment area is an area designated by the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) that does not meet the National Ambient
Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Attainment tests the ozone in
the air.
Conformity is a federal regulation required by the Clean Air Act
(CAA), allowing non-attainment areas to receive federal funding
for road and transit projects by ensuring the transportation
activities that are awarded funding and approval are consistent
with air quality goals. Conformity prevents transportation
plans with federally funded projects from hindering federally
funded efforts to improve air quality.
