Project Background:

The Town of Huntersville has requested that the MUMPO staff analyze proposed changes to the roadway network in the vicinity of Beatties Ford Road and NC 73.  The proposed changes are the result of recommendations from the Beatties Ford Road Small Area Plan adopted by the Town in September 2007. Any approved changes will be included in an amended MUMPO Thoroughfare Plan.

Listed below are the five recommended changes to be analyzed:

  • Realign the proposed Vance Road Extension so as to terminate at NC 73 west of its current proposed terminus.
  • Construct a new minor thoroughfare (A) that will link Vance Road Extension to NC 73 at a point opposite Terry Lane.
  • Construct a new minor thoroughfare (B) that will link Oliver Hager Road to Ervin Cook Road.
  • Realign the proposed Birkdale Commons Parkway Extension so that it will terminate at minor thoroughfare A.  The current proposed alignment links this roadway with Ervin Cook Road.
  • Terminate the proposed Hugh Torance Parkway Extension at minor thoroughfare A.  The current propose alignment extends the roadway to NC 73.

Concurrent with the study will be an effort to revise MUMPO’s Thoroughfare Plan to remove an outdated proposal for this area.  The current Thoroughfare Plan proposal recommends realigning NC 73 in the manner depicted below.  If approved, the revised Thoroughfare Plan will result in NC 73 staying on its existing alignment and the east-west and north-south realignments shown below will be eliminated.

April 16, 2008 Meeting

A public meeting was held on Wednesday, April 16 at 6:00 PM in Huntersville Town Hall to discuss a proposed realignment of a portion of the future Vance Road Extension. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the results of an analysis that has been conducted by MUMPO to determine if the segment of the future Vance Road Extension from the vicinity of Meadowlake Presbyterian Church to NC 73 should be realigned.  The Huntersville Town Board requested that MUMPO undertake this study at the time it adopted the Beatties Ford Road Corridor Small Area Plan in September 2007.

This meeting was a follow-up to one held in December to introduce this subject to the public. At that meeting, both the Vance Road Extension realignment and other proposed changes to the roadway network in the vicinity were discussed.  The April 16 meeting focused exclusively on the Vance Road Extension issue.  The other proposed changes will be discussed at future meetings.
