Old Monroe Road is a heavily congested major
thoroughfare in Mecklenburg and Union counties. It is ranked #11 on
MUMPO’s Candidate Projects List and is ranked in the top 30 out of
almost 300 projects listed in the 2030 Long-Range Transportation
Plan. The 2007-2013 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)
includes funding in 2013 for planning and design work to start on a
future widening however, no funding has been allocated for
construction. This project is identified as U-4713 and its project
limits are from Trade Street in Matthews to Wesley Chapel-Stouts
Road in Indian Trail.
Because of the severe congestion problem and
the likelihood that a widening may be many years in the future,
MUMPO has begun a study of the Old Monroe Road corridor as it is
defined in the 2007-2013 TIP as project U-4713. The study’s purpose
is to determine what, if any, short-term low-cost improvements can
be implemented in advance of the currently unfunded widening of the
roadway that can provide some relief to the existing congestion
problems.

what is being considered for the Old Monroe Road corridor.
