Old Monroe Rd.
Short Term Improvements Study

Old Monroe Road is a heavily congested major thoroughfare in Mecklenburg and Union counties.  It is ranked #11 on MUMPO’s Candidate Projects List and is ranked in the top 30 out of almost 300 projects listed in the 2030 Long-Range Transportation Plan.  The 2007-2013 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) includes funding in 2013 for planning and design work to start on a future widening however, no funding has been allocated for construction.  This project is identified as U-4713 and its project limits are from Trade Street in Matthews to Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road in Indian Trail.

Because of the severe congestion problem and the likelihood that a widening may be many years in the future, MUMPO has begun a study of the Old Monroe Road corridor as it is defined in the 2007-2013 TIP as project U-4713.  The study’s purpose is to determine what, if any, short-term low-cost improvements can be implemented in advance of the currently unfunded widening of the roadway that can provide some relief to the existing congestion problems.
